Rules for Thanking (Opening Doors)
1- Never sound sarcastic! Unless you mean to sound sarcastic, and the sarcasm is meant in a joking manner, at least attempt to sound sincere. A failed attempt is better than blatant sarcasm. Although I didn't discuss this in my last post, I felt it necessary to say not
2- a.When someone opens a door for you, thank them.
b.When someone opens two consecutive doors for you in a period of about 10 or 15 seconds of each other, thank for the 1st, the second is not necessary. The "momentum" from the first thank you should be sufficient for the second.
c.However if there is a 3rd door, in a period of 30 seconds or so, thank for the 1st and 3rd.
d.If you are know that the door-holder and yourself are going to the same place and there will be several doorholdings, thank for the 1st and last.
e.If the doorholdings are more than 30 seconds apart, thank for each.
f.If someone is showing you around somewhere, like giving a tour, thank for only the 1st door, and if you are certain that a particular door is the last, thank for the last. This goes back to "d".
g.When in doubt, just thank. But ALWAYS observe rule #1.
